Gansu, China
(2024)
The Yellow River has been a familiar name to me for almost as long as I can remember, although, of course, I had never seen it myself, and didn't always even know exactly where it was or why it was so famous. In contrary to other famous and mythical places, like New York or The Rocky Mountains, I had no visual images I could connect with The Yellow River. Only in recent years, I have been able to connect a visual impression to the name, based on images by photographers such as Zhang Kechun, who photographed the river in his wonderful book by the same name.
When I had the chance to spend some time along The Yellow River myself, in the Gansu Province, in and around the city of Lanzhou, I wanted to challenge this lack of visual imagery and see what presented itself to me. This little series of images is the result of this pursuit.
